Willie Greenough: AIA Virginia Honors Award Recipient

⭐️ Congratulations to Central Virginia community member, Willie Greenough! ⭐️

Recipient of the AIA Virginia Honor, Honorary Membership.

AIA Virginia is proud to announce that Willie Greenough has been selected for Honorary Membership in 2025, a distinction reserved for individuals of esteemed character who, though not eligible for conventional membership, have made exemplary and sustained contributions to architecture and the built environment.

Willie Greenough is a masterful model builder known for his meticulous craft, artistic integrity, and clarity of vision. Greenough brings a unique perspective informed by his lived experience as an autistic individual. As noted by his nominator, “Willie’s autism isn’t something he works around; it’s something he channels,” enabling him to make precise decisions that elevate his work.

Greenough’s models serve not only as tools for communication and design resolution but also as works of art that foster understanding and connection between architects, clients, and communities.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Willie Greenough will be honored at the Visions for Architecture Gala on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at the Richmond Downtown Marriott. Tickets available through ArchEx: www.aiava.org.

Session Description: As architecture embraces digital tools—AI plans, 3D printing, parametric modeling—we must ask: what do we risk losing? This session explores the work of Willie Greenough, an autistic architectural model builder whose neurodivergence enables rare precision, focus, and care. Like a computer, his mind processes form and detail with logic—yet with the soul of the human hand. His models help designers and communities better see and feel a project’s potential. Led by longtime collaborator Jimmy Grigg, the panel includes Willie himself and filmmaker Zach Grigg, whose short film invites audiences to slow down and see architecture through a different lens.

Congregation Beth Israel: AIA Virginia Honors Award Recipient

⭐️ Congratulations to Central Virginia project, Congregation Beth Israel ⭐️

Recipient of the AIA Virginia Honor, Test of Time Award.

Congregation Beth Israel has been selected to receive the prestigious 2025 Test of Time Award from AIA Virginia, which honors architectural excellence that has stood the test of time. The award is given to a structure at least 25 years old that continues to serve its original purpose while maintaining its original appearance and integrity.

Founded in 1881, Congregation Beth Israel is the longest continually operating synagogue in Virginia and the tenth oldest in the United States. Nestled beside Historic Court Square in downtown Charlottesville, the synagogue underwent a transformative expansion nearly three decades ago. With a strong commitment to remaining at the heart of the city, the congregation chose to add a 14,000 square-foot modern extension to its original 7,000 square-foot 19th-century sanctuary.

Congregation Beth Israel will be officially recognized at the Visions for Architecture Gala on Thursday, November 6, 2025, at the Richmond Downtown Marriott. Tickets available through ArchEx: www.aiava.org.

Designed collaboratively by brw architects and the congregation’s design committee, the addition pays homage to the historic structure while enhancing its presence. The project introduced a new chapel and entrance inspired by original architectural detailing, complemented by a contemporary two-story steel and glass window. A new courtyard now connects the historic and modern elements, creating a small urban park and welcoming community space.

Over the past 30 years, this thoughtful integration of old and new has strengthened congregational life, enriched the neighborhood’s character, and embodied the synagogue’s values of resilience, openness, and continuity.

AIA Virginia is proud to announce that VMDO Architects will receive the 2025 T. David Fitz-Gibbon Virginia Architecture Firm Award, the highest honor it bestows on a Virginia-based architecture firm. This prestigious recognition celebrates firms that have made outstanding and sustained contributions to the profession, the community, and the quality of the built environment. VMDO is notably the first-ever two-time recipient of this honor, having previously earned it in 2003.

Founded in 1976, VMDO Architects has offices in Charlottesville, Virginia, and Washington, DC. The firm is known for its unwavering commitment to designing community-centered environments that foster human connection and elevate the human experience. VMDO’s work is deeply rooted in the belief that architecture has the power to educate, inspire, and uplift.

Valley Social in Harrisonburg

Our chapter hosted a beautiful Valley Social on August 12th — Starting with a time of networking at Pale Fire Brewing, then we enjoyed this week’s concert in Downtown Harrisonburg together! 😊

We discussed topics from puppies to development to traffic engineering. Following our time of networking we celebrated the perfect weather by attending the Harrisonburg Levitt AMP concert featuring, Corey Harris Band. This 10 week free concert series brings the community together in downtown Harrisonburg to celebrate belonging and community life.

AIA Virginia Prize: Held annually by AIA Virginia for architecture students across the state. Students are given one weekend to submit a design solution for the presented brief.

Emerging Professionals: Albemarle Courts Building Hard Hat Tour

Last Friday, our community came together for an insightful tour of the Albemarle Courts building, a central landmark in the heart of Charlottesville. Led by Eric Amtmann, with Dalgliesh Gilpin Paxton Architects, attendees delved into the building’s fascinating renovation history, its master plan, and the intricate design considerations behind the new courtroom layouts.
